Technology does not stand still. There are more and more convenient and portable gadgets designed to make people’s lives easier. The same applies to devices for listening to various audio files – headphones. If previously you had to regularly untangle the wires to finally connect them to your phone or computer, now you can easily connect the devices via Bluetooth. This procedure is simple and quite intuitive, but beginners may still have questions. In this guide, we will explain how to connect wireless headphones to an iOS or Android smartphone.

How to connect wireless headphones to a smartphone on Android

Regardless of the model of your wireless headphones, the connection procedure will be standard. First, take the device out of the box and see if there is a charge indicator light. Sometimes it is a flashing light or other light indicator, although most often there are no special designations. You can also check the battery in another way. If the model is charging itself, connect the gadget to the charging unit and trace the light signals. In this case, there should definitely be something flashing on the device. This is done for the convenience of users and will not keep the gadget on charge for too long. As a rule, it is noted in the manual or on the box exactly how the light should blink. For example, a high intensity indicates a low battery, and a steady glow about 100% in the battery.

Without enough charge, the first connection may be unsuccessful, so this is a good place to start. After all the preliminary preparations, turn on Bluetooth on your phone. This feature is usually in the settings or in the pop-up top menu. Now you can activate the headphones. Absolutely all models have a corresponding power button. Sometimes you have to press it to make the device available for pairing. Open the menu on the phone, which shows all the appropriate devices for Bluetooth connection, and select the headphones there. It is important that sometimes the gadget is not named as it is written on the box. You may see a combination of numbers and letters or other. Often the name is spelled out in the manual, so if you do not see the expected in the available devices – do not panic. If you don’t have the manual handy, turn off the headphones and check which name is missing. Also, new devices do not always appear on the phone automatically. Refresh the list by selecting “Search for devices.”

Tap on the name of the headphones, and then the gadgets will connect. Additional approval may be required. Immediately after pairing, “Connected” will appear next to the device name. You will also likely see the charge level on the pop-up menu. If the device has a case, don’t rush to take the headphones out of the case. Often the connection process is through the “case” and without the case, Bluetooth will simply not see the new device.

How to connect wireless headphones to iPhone

The process of connecting the “ears” to Apple gadgets is not much different from the Android version. First, make sure the device is charged, then turn on the headphones and Bluetooth in the phone settings. Select the new hardware from the list and allow the connection. Sometimes you need to separately check the box on your iPhone for any new connections. You can do this in the same Bluetooth submenu where the available devices are displayed. If you decide to use AirPods – the recommended headphones from Apple, you must take into account a number of features. First, update your phone to the latest firmware version. For example, the Pro version of the gadget will only work with iOS above version 13.2, the second generation will connect exclusively with the device on iOS 12.2 and above. Secondly, each earphone and case has its own charge, you have to remember this when using it. For example, if one of the earbuds runs out of power, you can charge it through the unplugged case.

When plugging in, open the case, but do not remove the devices from it. Press the small button on the case for the gadget to go into a new connection mode. If Siri is not set up, the phone will prompt you to do so after connecting.

How to connect AirPods to an Android smartphone

Connecting to a non-“native” device is no different from the usual, but without an iPhone a number of functions will remain inaccessible. In particular, you won’t be able to use:
  • Siri;
  • audio interruption after the earpiece is removed from the ear;
  • controlling the charge and managing the power consumption of the smartphone.
For convenience, you can download a number of additional programs. AirButton or Asistant Trigger can help you determine if you’ve put the earbuds in your ear to automatically start streaming audio. You will also be able to see the remaining charge of the devices.

What to do if the headphones do not connect

There are no special recommendations here. If you have done everything correctly and the connection does not happen, try to repeat the procedure. Turn off and on the headphones and put them in pairing mode again. Do the same with the Bluetooth on your phone. Also put the headphones in the case, if available, and hold the gadget as close to the smartphone as possible. Re-check the firmware – sometimes that may be the reason.

If the headphones previously connected, but suddenly stopped, check to see if they are already connected to another device. If none of this helps, select the headphones in the Bluetooth submenu and press “Forget Device”. This will reload all saved settings and help resolve the problem. To see if there is a real problem, try connecting a different device to your smartphone or the headphones to a different phone. Interference from other gadgets, especially if there are other Bluetooth connections nearby, could be the cause of the malfunction.

Reboot the headphones. There is usually at least one mechanical or touch button on each individual device that is responsible for switching music in a playlist or answering a call. Try pressing them on the two headphones to reset the devices.

What to do if there is no sound after updating your phone

First, open the settings of the paired device and check that the headphones work for both talking and music. Sometimes the new firmware resets the user settings. You can also “roll back” the phone to the factory settings. This usually helps with most software bugs that occur after updates. Don’t forget to reboot and reconnect the headphones and phone.

Remember that the problem may be physical. For example, water intrusion or a hard bump. Think about what’s been going on with the headphones lately. It may be worth contacting a service center.
